Three sophomore students, Jose Garcia, Megan Paschedag and Estanislao Blas, from Spry Community Links High School joined Life Directions staff and over dozen DePaul University students to begin the work of building a Butterfly Garden over the summer. On a very windy day everyone pitched and in three short hours weeded two gardens, re-soiled and painted containers, planted flowers, cut down stumps and prepared the back of the Butterfly Garden for a new beehive.

At the end of the day everyone was happy with the day’s accomplishments. Megan and Justine student from DePaul University painted a big board to lay the groundwork for a small mural. Jose and Estanislao worked together to get prepare the garden for a layer of wood chips and to rid the plot of dangerous stumps that people could trip on. The students also added color with grasses and violets. They turned drab gray flower pots into bright yellow ones. One volunteer reflected, "I painted these flower pots yellow so that when people walk by their lives will be brightened! Yellow is a happy color!"

This week students will paint the beehive for a colony of bees moving from Bourbonnais to Chicago.
